Chapter Seven – The Eastern Outpost - Russia and the Eastern European States
1. Russia
What the West likes to call ‘Russia’ (more properly known as the Russian Federation) is a massive territory stretching from the Pacific Ocean to Europe itself.
The Russian Federation is part of The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) comprised of the former Soviet Republics, namely Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Georgia. The CIS has, however, been riven by crises, some of them military in nature, and is likely to be dissolved in the not too distant future.
The CIS is important in that the majority of its member states could be classified as Second World, if not Third World, and are responsible for the tidal wave of illegal immigration into Russia itself.
Furthermore, Russia shares long and porous borders with China, Mongolia and North Korea. It encompasses over 17 million square kilometres (6.5 million square miles) and is the largest country in the world.
It is also home to no less than 160 different ethnic groups. The First World element — consisting of white Europeans — is concentrated west of the Ural Mountains, and currently makes up around 77 percent of the population.
This translates to around 109 million First Worlders, and in excess of 35 million Second or Third Worlders already present inside its borders, giving a total ‘Russian’ population estimate of 142 million (according to the Russian State Statistics Service in 2008).
It is sobering to realise that there are fewer white Europeans living in Russia, which covers an eighth of the world’s surface area, then there are in the United States of America. This figure is of even more importance when it is understood that, in real terms, Russia has an illegal Third World immigration problem which nearly mirrors that of the USA. The smaller white population of Russia, however, makes the problem even more critical.
Currently, Russia has a legal immigration rate of some 100,000 entering the country every year — almost all of them from the non-European CIS states. In addition, the Russian government estimates that there were, as of 2008, an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants from those ex-Soviet states in Russia: mostly Georgians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Tajiks. The number of illegal migrants in Moscow alone is believed to be around one million.
To further complicate matters, the far eastern regions of Russia, which were always sparsely populated with First World elements, have been the subject of sustained immigration from China. Many of that latter country’s nationals are fleeing their own nation’s overpopulation and birth control regulations, and as a result, have a much higher birth rate than native Russians.
Huge portions of the far east of Russia are in the process of being colonised through demographics. Russia’s main Pacific port and naval base of Vladivostok, once closed to foreigners, today is bristling with Chinese markets, restaurants and trade houses.
Experts predict that the Chinese population in Russia will increase to at least 10 million by 2010 and Chinese will become the dominant ethnic group in the Russian Far East region by 2030.
